DIY Screening and Distribution Workshop
Conducted by
Robert Greenwald,
Jacquie Soohen, and
Carol Crowe
Getting your video seen a gazillion times online is undeniably great, but there's something
extra special about RL screenings, be it at a house party, a community center, an art
space, an independent cinema, or a guerrilla screening with a video projector on a downtown
wall. It's also nice to sell a few DVDs so you can upgrade your gear, fund your travel to
the next screening, and maybe even pay down your credit card debt from your last indy
production. In this workshop we will explore different ways that DIY videomakers are
creating screening and distribution networks to bypass the big players.
Robert Greenwald will
talk about his distribution model for independent political documentary, through grassroots
"house parties" and with the decentralized screening community
Brave New Theaters.
Jacquie Soohen will
discuss the Big Noise Films model of community screenings, festivals, and the indymedia
circuit that has kept Big Noise able to financially survive for the last 8 years while
touring, screening, shooting and editing new material from Argentina to Iraq to New
Orleans.
Carol Crowe will discuss her experience as the president of short film distributor
Apollo Cinema, where she has
over 14 years of experience in film and television acquisition, distribution, marketing,
development and production.
